Public Internet Access and Computer Use

The Yates Community Library offers free access to the Internet as well as a variety of desktop publishing programs & other software applications. Simply walk in and request the use of a computer at the circulation desk.

Computers are available for use in 30-minute sessions.  Patrons may continue with an additional 30 minute session only if no other person is waiting.  Subsequent sessions are subject to termination at any time if another patron is waiting.  The earliest patron to sign in will be the first asked to finish their session.

Projects cannot be saved to the hard-drive of the public computers. You must bring a flash drive to save your work. Flash drives can be purchased at the Circulation Desk for $5.00.

The library has one OPAC computer available to search for books. This is located near the Circulation Desk. Please feel free to ask for assistance if you cannot find what you are looking for. You can also search for books online through our Catalog that can be accessed through Nioga's website.

For those who anticipate needing a computer for an extended amount of time please reserve a computer in advance. Reservations are held for a grace period of five minutes. After that time the booking is automatically cancelled and the computer becomes available to others.

For patrons seeking to complete online testing, there is a computer available that is strictly for those requiring an especially quiet location.

All computers are available on a first come first serve basis unless reservations have been made in advance.

Sound is enabled on all library computers. Headphones are provided. Computers are not available for use ten minutes prior to close.

Please review our Computer Use Policy and Computer, Internet, and Wireless Network Policy for more info.

Inter-Library Loan

Search for books from the 22 libraries of the NIOGA Library System, serving Niagara, Orleans, and Genesee counties.

You may request (place a Hold on) an item online at www.nioga.org or by calling or visiting the library. During this process, you may select your pick-up location as this library or, if more convenient, another library in the Nioga system.  You will receive a phone call or an email when the item has arrived and is ready for you to pick up.  For items not found in the Nioga catalog, we welcome your requests and will seek to borrow them for you from another library.  Please ask at the circulation desk.

Meeting Room Use

The meeting room is available to the public on a first come first served basis. The meeting room may be used by organizations engaged in educational, cultural, intellectual, or charitable activities. Use must be scheduled in advance with the director. The name of the organization requesting use, time of meeting, contact person’s name and telephone number are required. The organization may set up the folding chairs, and request use of the coffee maker for hot water. Meetings may not extend beyond library hours unless prior a staff member or library trustee is in the building to assume responsibility for turning out lights and locking all doors.

To inquire about arrangements for the Meeting Room call YCL at 585-765-9041.

Building-Community Use

The building of Yates Community library is open to groups for public usage at the discretion of the Library Director and the Library Board. Eligible groups include but are not limited to continuing education groups, children’s groups and various non-sectarian associations. Groups whose purpose is in accord with the general mission of the Yates Community Library are to be encouraged to utilize the facility for meetings.

Display Items

Items for display may not be of political or commercial nature, but for display of hobby collections, Boy/Girl Scouts, 4-H projects and other similar use. Usual time allotted for the display case is a maximum of 30 days. Due to the lack of space and other considerations, the library cannot accept the display of trophies for personal or team achievements.

Accessibility

YCL provides a variety of accommodations and universal design features for its facilities, programs and services. The Library building has an accessible entrance and restroom. We make our best effort to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities. Please make requests for accommodations as early as possible to allow time for coordination of services and assistive technology.

Services to the Visually Impaired:

The NIOGA Library System participates in the program sponsored by the New York State Talking Book and Braille Library (TBBL). Residents who are unable to read standard printed material because of physical disabilities can take advantage of the services from the TBBL.

Eligible adults and children may borrow books and magazines in cassette or digital cartridge format and in Braille. The TBBL book collection is similar to that found in a public library; it consists of popular fiction and nonfiction, as well as general informational and recreational materials for all ages and tastes.

TBBL loans special equipment for use with its recorded books. Currently, eligible borrowers may request both a cassette player and the new digital player.
